Tarzana Cost of Living Guide

Tarzana is a suburban neighborhood located in sunny Los Angeles, California. Tarzana is a gorgeous neighborhood, and its Melody Acres are zoned R-A which allows residents to enjoy a farming life while remaining within driving distance of a local Starbucks.  The latest population figures show Tarzana’s population to be around 43,567 residents.  It is a great neighborhood for raising a family, elders looking to settle down, and young professionals.  Speaking of raising a family, Tarzana also has excellent public schools, which are great if you have children or are planning a family.   The neighborhood is home to tons of restaurants, coffee shops, and lovely outdoor parks, so there is plenty to do to keep yourself busy and entertained.  It is also within driving distance of the city so you’ll be able to enjoy both a quiet suburban life as well as hang out in the city for a bit of excitement.  However, as you must know by now, enjoying the spoils of LA doesn’t come cheap.  Tarzana has a cost of living index score of 140,8. This means that the cost of living here is 40,8% higher than the national average. The cost of living increased in 2021, and general prices increased by 3.2%. The largest increases stemmed from housing, food, and transportation.  So, if you’re thinking about moving to Tarzana, you might want to prepare yourself financially.  Let’s tackle one of the major money drainers, housing!

When looking at Tarzana cost of living, buying and renting can be pretty expensive. When comparing the two, there isn’t much of a difference between the costs when looking at the cost of monthly rent and a monthly mortgage bill.  When purchasing a house, there are so many things to consider. The down payment alone costs around 15 to 20% of the selling price, and then there’s the closing cost to consider. So, if you want to move to Tarzana, we suggest you enlist the aid of a brilliant realtor, and carefully consider the location and size of your new home.  That being said, the average cost of a house in Tarzana is upwards of $496,300. This is much higher than the national average of $184,700.  Depending on how much you end up paying for your new home, your monthly mortgage bill can average at $2,732. Once again, this is much higher than the national average of $1,197. The cost of housing in Tarzana can reach highs of over a million dollars in some areas so this is definitely something to consider when figuring out your housing situation.

Renting a Property

If the cost of buying a home is too expensive, you might think about renting an apartment.  As with housing, the cost of rent will depend on the location, size, and amenities offered. By now, we’ve established that Tarzana isn’t the most affordable place to live. So, it comes as no surprise that the average cost of rent is around $1,241. Fortunately, this isn’t much higher than the national average of $949.  If you’re moving on your own, you could consider a studio apartment which can go for around $880. If you’re willing to splurge a bit, you could consider a single-bedroom apartment for $1,650.  Small families might consider a two-bedroom apartment for an average of $2,495 per month.

Utilities are another unavoidable expense. However, unlike most of the expenses on this list, the cost of utilities isn’t that bad.  The average cost of electricity per month can range between $101 to $185 per month depending on your apartment or home’s size and how much you choose to use the AC.  Basic phone service can cost you between $189 and $192 per month. These averages are slightly higher than the national average of $175.  The cost of a 60 Mbps uncapped internet connection can go for around $48 per month, which is much lower than the national average of $60.

Food and Groceries

While a bit higher than the national average, Tarzana cost of living for food and groceries is not as expensive as you would think. Tarzana definitely offers some affordable food and grocery options. It all comes down to where you choose to shop. But, you can get some idea about how much your monthly grocery bill could be by looking at the average cost of goods.  You can expect to pay around $4,58 for a pound of ground beef, which isn’t much different from the national average of $4,22.  Fried chicken can cost you $1,72 and a gallon of milk can cost around $2,19.  Tarzana is home to many great and affordable restaurants if you love eating out. One of the locals’ favorite and affordable restaurants is the Ubatuba Acai, where you can eat for two for just $15. Another great restaurant is Jojo’s Mediterranean Grill, where you can get a meal for two for just $10.  If you’re willing to splurge, we also recommend you check out Mora Italiano, where you can get a meal for two for $80.  Tarzana and LA, in general, is also a hub for vegan foods if you’d like to experience something new or would like to move to an area that suits your lifestyle.

Farmers Markets

It can be challenging to make new friends and get acquainted with a new city. One of the best ways to get the vibe of a new neighborhood and meet new people is to visit the local farmers market Visiting the farmers market is also a great way to cash in on affordable fruits, vegetables, and produce. It’s also a great way of getting out and enjoying the gorgeous LA sun.  One of our favorite farmer’s markets is the Encino Farmers Market. The Encino farmers market is active all year around and is open every Sunday from 8 am to 1 pm. The market sports over 30 farmers from all around Southern and Central California.  What makes this market great, besides all the delicious food, is that it donates a portion of the profits each week in support of ONEgeneration.  Another great farmers market that you can check out is the Northridge Farmers Market. This market is active from March 17th to November 3rd and is open on Wednesdays from 5 pm to 9 pm. It is the perfect market for an after-work outing or to take a lovely evening walk and grab some food.

While not as expansive as some of the larger metropolitan areas, Tarzana does offer a pretty great public transportation system. That being said, a large majority of residents still prefer to drive themselves or take an uber.  So, for Tarzana cost of living in this respect, you can expect to pay around $3,31 for a gallon of gas if you own a car. This is slightly more expensive than the national average of $2,22. So, if you’re planning on using your own vehicle, you might want to think through your fuel costs carefully.  When choosing to use a private vehicle, you should also consider the cost of maintenance. On average, you can expect to pay between $100 to $150 for car insurance and around $50 for tire balancing.

Public Transport

If you want to save a bit of cash while living in Tarzana, we’d recommend you opt for public transport when making your way around town.  Taking public transport can save you a lot of time by avoiding LA traffic, and money on fuel. It is also pretty convenient.  The orange line busses are one of our favorite options. Not only are their tap cards super affordable at $1, but the cost of a single ride is also super cheap at $1,5. A day pass can cost you up to $5.  What makes the tap card so great is that it works like a debit card and allows you to upload cash as you need it.

Healthcare in Tarzana is another costly expense that you’ll have to prepare yourself for if you’re serious about moving. However, one thing you can be sure of is that you’ll receive your money’s worth of healthcare.  California is currently ranked no. 23 in the country on the list of best healthcare access and affordability. This means that while it is pricey, you’ll be receiving fantastic healthcare.  On average, you can expect to pay around $125 for a doctor’s appointment and $125 for a visit to the optometrist.  A trip to the dentist can end up costing you around $110.  Overall, given how expensive healthcare is and how unexpectedly illnesses and sicknesses spring up on us, we suggest you invest in healthcare insurance.

The Dreamscape is a fun and interactive VR experience that plays like a choose-your-own-adventure game. If you’ve ever dreamed of slaying dragons or fighting aliens, this is the perfect activity for you.  General admissions to the Dreamscape goes for around $20.  Another great indoor activity is the Maze Rooms Escape Rooms. As the name suggests, these are fun escape room games that are great for a group of friends.
